Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog: I suck at making games (so you don’t have to). The idea behind this blog is to tell my experiences as someone who is just starting out in the videogame industry as a game designer. 

If you are passionate about game design, I know that sometimes conferences, articles and documentaries can be frustrating to watch: geniuses that discuss concepts so far away from us (millions of dollars, big projects, hundreds of playtesters) that it becomes hard to apply their lessons in our everyday job. I’m not saying there isn’t something valuable to learn in all these things, it’s just that.. sometimes you just have a problem that is so tiny, so stupid or so specific that you find yourself lost. And that feeling, being lost, is something that everyone can experience, but is much stronger when you are just starting out and you don’t have anything to reassure you about your skills. Furthermore this will be my weekly meeting with design theory, just to force myself to study and learn new things.

Who am I?

I am a 2nd year game design student at Digital Bros Game Academy in Milan. Before this, I graduated in physics and then decided to pursue my passion for game design. I am also working on some board games hoping to publish them one day.

When? What will I talk about? 

I will (hopefully) publish an article every tuesday. I will talk about game design theory and my personal experience as a student/junior. My goal will be to write about the journey and the hardships I encounter more than to teach anything specific (as I’m in no position to teach anything…).

Why?

Because every game has to suck before it becomes good, and that's also true for every game designer. It's important not to mix the two, and to know where to act accordingly. In the end, it's a hard journey, but at least we'll suck at making games together. And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, we'll suck a little less with each passing day.
